At the time of his WWI draft registration on June 5, 1917, James was 21 years old, living in Wheeler, Arkansas, self-employed as a farmer, and married. His physical description was listed as medium build, light brown eyes, with red (balding) hair, and with no disabilities.

In the 1920 census, the James McReynolds household, living in Elm Springs township, consisted of James (as HOH), wife Georgia, daughters Myrtle and Mary, and James' brother Charly.
