Civil War Union Army Officer. A native of Morris County, New Jersey, he recruited a company of soldiers in May 1862 in response to New Jersey Governor Charles Olden’s call for more men to help fight the rebellion. In August 1862 they were mustered into the 11th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry as Company H, and Dorastus Logan was commissioned its Captain and commander on August 13, 1862. The regiment was assigned to the III Army Corps brigade commanded by Brigadier General Joseph B. Carr, and participated in the December 1862 Fredericksburg Campaign and in the May 1863 Chancellorsville Campaign. At the July 1863 Battle of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, his regiment was part of the unauthorized movement of the III Corps by its commander, Major General Daniel E. Sickles, off of Cemetery Ridge to Emmitsburg Road on the Second Day of the engagement. There, stationed next to the Klingel Farm House, the 11th New Jersey Infantry first took casualties from Confederate artillery, then from Confederate infantry when troops under Lieutenant General James Longstreet attacked the thin Union line. The regiment’s two superior officers, Colonel Robert McAllister and Major Philip Kearny, fell wounded early in the attack, and command fell to senior Captain Luther Martin. Moments after, Captain Martin was killed, and command passed to Captain Logan, being the next senior officer. Just after been informed by Adjutant John Schoonover that he was now in command of the 11th New Jersey, Captain Logan was himself shot and killed. His remains were first buried on the battlefield, then were taken home by his family. Interred in the United Methodist Church Cemetery in Succasunna Morris County, New Jersey, a cenotaph was also erected for him in the First Presbyterian Churchyard, Morristown, New Jersey.
