One of Benton's early settlers and a noble woman, Mrs. James McCabe passed away early Friday morning July 30, 1909, of hemorrhage of the brain, at the age of 62 years, 2 months and 21 days.
Mrs. McCabe was a woman well known in this community and her untimely death came as a great shock to all. To all appearance she was enjoying apparently good health but suddenly Tuesday night about 8:30 she complained of a severe headache. Medial aid was hastily summoned. She sank rapidly into an unconscious condition and gradually became weaker. All that medical assistance and loving hands could do, was done but to no avail. The heartbroken family and her many friends anxiously awaited the outcome of this battle for life, but God had called her, and she went to meet her eternal reward in heaven.
Margaret Mullarkie was born May 9, 1847, at Galena, Ill. and died July 30, 1909. She received her education at the Mazzenchelli Convent in Benton. On Jan. 7, 1868, she was untied in marriage to James McCabe, living in Leadmine and vicinity until Mar. 4, 1880, when they moved to their present abode.
To this union eight children came to bless this home four sons and four daughters, all of whom survive her namely: Geo. E. of Buncombe, Daniel of Benton, John, Mary, Rose, Estelle, and Leo who remain at home, and Clara wife of Dan McKernan, of Buncome, whom with a kind and loving husband mourn the loss of a dear loving wife and mother. She also leaves to mourn her death two sisters, Mrs. Sweeny of St. Louis, who was at her bedside at the time of her death and Mrs. Moran of Sparta, Ill.
Funeral services were held at 9:30 am Monday from St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Rev Father Bergen officiating. A large concourse of relatives and friends followed the remains to their last resting place in the cemetery adjoining.
The pallbearers were Messrs. Chas. Robbins, Frank McElroy, Frank Rooney, Link Gray, J.V. Swift and John McCrea. The funeral procession was a large one, the floral tributes many, a testimonial of the respect and esteem in which the deceased was held by her friends and neighbors.
