Ethel “Skeets” McDaniel Durham went home to be with the Lord on January 25, 2013 after a lengthy illness. She was born in Northwest Georgia on April 15, 1931 to the late Leonard L. and Bessie McDaniel. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Jack; and a sister, Eva Lawson. She is survived by her loving husband of 61 years, R.V. Durham, Sr.; a daughter, Sandra D. Pulliam of Winston-Salem; two granddaughters, Meredith and Natalie Pulliam; a son, Ralph V. Durham, Jr.; a daughter-in-law, Sharon; a grandson, Ross Durham of Charlotte; and a sister, Esther Reynolds of Charlotte. Mrs. Durham was a devoted wife, mother and “Nana” to her grandchildren, and she loved her Lord, Jesus Christ. Her dad and mom had a great influence on her life, as she witnessed her father serve as a pastor in several churches in West Virginia and Western North Carolina and it inspired her warm, caring and compassion for others, which was evident throughout her life. After graduating from Lee College, Cleveland, TN in 1949, she accepted a position in accounting with Southern Bell in Charlotte. She was an accomplished soloist and while performing at a wedding in April 1951 she met her husband and they were married on October 6, 1951. They moved to Durham and then to Winston-Salem in 1953. Shortly thereafter she accepted a position in accounting with the Bahnson Company where she was employed until 1973. In the same year, she accepted a position with Local 391 affiliated with the International Brotherhood of Teamsters in their Pension/Health Claims department where she served the members and families until her retirement in late 1995. As a wife and mother, she lived out Proverbs 31:26-31: “She speaks with wisdom and faithful instruction is on her tongue. She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness. Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her; many women do noble things but you surpass them all. Charm is deceptive and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised. Give her the reward she has earned and let her works bring her praise at the city gate.” Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, January 28 at Knollwood Baptist Church with Dr. Bob Setzer, Jr. and the Rev. Lucrecia Norman officiating. Entombment will follow in Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service. The family would like to express appreciation for the loving care given by the Staff at the Greystone Cottage in Bermuda Village, the Hospice team and formerly by Bayada nurses. Memorials may be made to Knollwood Baptist Church, 330 Knollwood Street, Winston-Salem, NC 27104; Alzheimers Association, 3800 Shamrock Drive, Charlotte, NC 28215-3220; or Hospice and Palliative Care Center, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103
