He was enumerated in his parents' household in 1850 and 1860, age 13 and 23, respectively. In 1871, he married Nancy Agnes Dunlap. In the 1880 census, he reported he was age 40 (South Carolina). His nephew, Jacob Melvin Amick, lived next door.
