Know as Eben to distinguish him from his father, he grew up on his father's cotton plantation, attending local schools and graduating from the T.A. Futrall High School in Marianna. He then attended Rankin Trade School where he studied steam engineering. He became a police officer and at the time of his death was the night sergeant of the Marianna Police Department.
