DIED - BURR - At the home of his parents in River Falls, Oct. 30,1884 Albion, son of S. H. and L. E. Burr, aged 29 years.
- Albion Burr was born April 1st, 1855 at Princeton, Ill. The family soon after moved to this place where most of his life was spent. The interest with which he engaged in boyhood pursuits and amusements indicated the genial and earnest nature which has since won so many friends. When fifteen years old the death of his brother together with his words of counsel spoken upon the death bed made a deep impression on his mind and led him to the christian life. in the following May he united with the Congregational church of this place, of which he has since been a faithful member. With his growth in Christian life came the desire to fit himself for broader fields of usefulness and to this end he directed his energies. After a year spent in preparatory studies at Galesville he entered the State University in the fall of '77 graduating class of '82. His work was accomplished by faithful persevering effort, and his instructors said of him, "He is a thorough student, one on whom we can always rely." The same character appears in his later work. After graduating he taught one year at Pepin (preceding Mr. Evans whose death we still mourn.) Since that time he has been principal of the schools in Baldwin where by faithfulness and devotion to his duties he endeared himself to the whole community so that one of the officers of the school board wrote to his parents "He was beloved by his pupils as a teacher is seldom beloved." His vacations were spent at home caring for the loved sister so recently taken from our midst and in every way sustaining those who were left with his cheerful, thoughtful tenderness. His death came as a shock to the whole community, few knowing how sick he was when his death was announced. Though not feeling well for several weeks,he had attended to school duties with the exception of one day Wednesday October 22 when he came home for care and rest. On the following Tuesday the developments were such as to cause grave fears. On Wednesday the physicians informed his friends that there was no hope of his recovery. When told that he could not live he seemed surprised and asked if there was immediate danger. He hear in silence the reply, "You can live but a few hours," but soon said,"It is a the Good Father wills, I am ready."During the hours that remained to him his faith never faltered. Almost at this last conscious moment he sang with a clear strong voice,Gates Ajar as the hymn which best expressed his thought in that hour and soon after dropped into a quiet sleep from which he awoke "within the gates." Words fail when we would express our sympathy with the aged parents, thus bereaved of him to whom they looked as their comfort and support in their declining days and his sister in the loss of her brother's tender care and affectionate companionship. To him the "Gates" opened only to an everlasting reunion with the dear ones of whom the chosen companion of his life, only three weeks ago sent him her last earthly message, "Carrie and I are waiting for you." The sorrow which to him was so dark endured upon the joys of an eternal morning. May the Good Father in whom he trusted comfort the mourning hearts as He alone can do, and help us all to so live, that like him we can say when our hour comes,"I am ready." C.A.
