Herbert was named after his Uncle because when his grandma Ida died they couldn't find his Uncle Herbert Abels and didn't think he would come home alive. His Uncle was in the war behind the front lines.

Herbert Charles Abels was born December 2, 1943, to the late Walter and Mildred Abels. He graduated from Benson High School in 1961 and joined the Marines shortly after. In 1966 he married Connie, the mother of his two sons, Matt and Marc. He later married Kathy, who died of cancer in January of 2001 and is buried in York, Nebraska. He worked for Schering-Plough and received early retirement at the age of 60.

Herbert moved to Biloxi, MS in 2006 and finally to Phenix City, AL in 2010 to live with his niece, Kammy. He loved the Nebraska Cornhuskers and enjoyed bowling, baseball, playing cards and gambling.

After the services the family would like to invite everyone to the Chances "R" Restaurant in York for a time of fellowship.
