The son of the late George and Jasmine Abdalla of Opelousas, Edward was raised and went to school in that town. He finished college at Gulfport Military Academy in Gulfport, Mississippi.
A well-known businessman and civic leader, Abdalla opened Abdalla's store in Lafayette 55 years ago, and served as the president of Abdalla's Lafayette, Inc. A 1964 recipient of the Lafayette Civic Cup Award, Abdalla's community involvement was diverse.
He was a USL Foundation President's Club member; organizer and board member of the United Givers Fund for the March of Dimes; past president of the Lafayette Chamber of Commerce; First national Bank board member; past president of the Exchange Club of Lafayette; and past vice president and board member of the Louisiana Retailers Association.
Mr. Abdalla instituted the Home and Trade Show, which established the New Hope Center for retarded children. He also sponsored annual 4-H Club Awards Banquet for more than 30 years, as well as the Policeman of the Month Award, and served as chairman of Boy and Girl Scout drives.
The Abdalla name as become even more familiar in Lafayette with Abdalla's originating the Lafayette's annual Christmas parade. He also reigned as King Gabriel XXIX in Lafayette's Mardi Gras carnival.
Mr. Abdalla was a veteran of World War II, and was a member of the American Legion. He was a member of St. John's Cathedral Church and the Knights of Columbus.
He was survived by his wife, Irma Belle Poche Abdalla; one daughter, one son, four brothers, one sister and two grandchildren.
