Actor, Union Leader. A character actor of stage, screen, and television, Derwent was born Harold Stanley David Wolff into a family of diamond merchants. The London native appeared in "Stanley and Livingstone" and "The Story of Irene and Vernon Castle," among other classic films, and notably served as the president of Actors Equity Association from 1946 until 1952. He provided the bequest for the coveted "Clarence Derwent Awards," which are annually awarded at the close of each theatre season to the most promising new performers, male and female, to appear on Broadway. The winning of the Clarence Derwent Award augurs well for a distinguished career, and the overwhelming majority of its recipients have become international stars. Derwent, who died at the age of 75, is buried with his sister. Their gravesite was refurbished through the efforts of Actors Equity Association.
