Phillip was the eighth child of Benjamin and Nancy Tharp. He attended college one year in Corvallis and one year in Monmouth. Then in early 1889 while his parents were on an extended trip east, he became sick. No one thought it was serious, but he died a few days later, presumably of "brain fever". He was only 22 when he died.
