Walter A. "Sonny" Short Jr., 73, passed away at the Hadlow Center of Hospice on Sept. 13, 2009.
A lifelong resident of St. Augustine, Sonny was a member of the 1954 graduating class of Ketterlinus High School. He retired as Chief Warrant Officer Four from the Florida National Guard after 42 years of service. Sonny also ran a local catering service for many years.
He was past president of the St. Augustine NCO Club and a member of the Elks Lodge No. 829, the Florida National Guard Officers Club and the St. Augustine Boating Club. He was a longtime member of Crescent Beach Baptist Church who was actively involved in the building committee.
Sonny will be deeply missed and is survived by his son, Preston W. Short; daughter, Lori A. Petersen; and sister, Linda Short, all of St. Augustine; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. His wife of 54 years, Gail P. Short, passed away on Aug. 29, 2009.
Visitation will be held on Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Craig Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Craig Funeral Home Chapel, with Pastor David Beauchamp officiating. Burial will follow at Jacksonville National Cemetery with full military honors.
