He enlisted on Nov 5, 1861 in Company I of the 82nd Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment. While serving in the Union Army, he was wounded on May 8, 1862 at McDowells in Virginia during the Battle of Bull Pasture Mountain. He later received a Civil War Pension which his wife continued unto her death.
He married three times.
1) First to a Ellen Webling on 25 Sep 1866 in Delaware County, OH. They had at least Edward Carpenter b. abt 1868, but by 1870 he was single. Unknown how the marriage ended.
2) His next marriage was to Hannah "Han" Landon on 26 Jul 1871 in Delaware County, OH. Sadly she died on complications of childbirth 13 months later.
3) His last marriage was to Aurelia E. Philipps on 1 Apr 1874 and they had only one daughter Mary Grace "Grace" in Jan 1876. This wife inherited his Civil War pension after his death.
