Published in Daily Press on April 14, 2008 (in part): HAMPTON - Grace Lee Messick Southall Carpenter, of Hampton, died on Saturday, April 12, 2008, at the age of 90.

She was a native Poquoson and a graduate of Poquoson High School, but spent most of her adult life in Hampton. She resided at the Devonshire Adult Home in her later years. She was employed by the Hampton City School Board, as an elementary school secretary and retired after 25 years of service.

Left to cherish her memory is her loving family and a host of friends; daughter, Cordelia S. Boothe and husband, James K. Boothe of Gloucester; two sons, Charles M. "Bud" Southall III and wife, Jean F. of Poquoson, and Wayne L. Southall and friend, Teresa McPherson of Yorktown; godson, Erby Harris and wife, Anita of Williamsburg; goddaughter, Marcella Waters and husband, Nelson; stepdaughter, Shirley C. Burch; grandchildren, James E. Boothe, Jamie K. Boothe, William Barry Boothe, Charles T. Southall, and David S. Southall; eight great-grandchildren; brother, Joseph Messick; sisters-in-law, Alma Behler and Margaret Messick; many kind nieces and nephews; and special friends, Carol Dale and Connie Hunsecker.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Zadok W. and Sarah Messick; her 1st husband, Charles M. Southall Jr., and her 2nd husband, Lewis E. Carpenter Sr.; brothers, Preston Messick, Robert Messick, and Thomas Messick; sisters, Indiana Ferguson, Sarah Thomas, Della Insley, and Mary Kinder.

Grace was a member of Memorial Baptist Church, Gleaners Sunday School class, Hampton Association Education Office Personnel, and Colonial Place Women's Club.
