Marian Cornwall Hackett was born September 1, 1914 in Salt Lake City, Utah, the daughter of J. Spencer Cornwall, former director of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, and Mary Alice Haigh Cornwall. She died peacefully Saturday, October 7, 2000.
Marian attended school in Salt Lake City, graduating from the LDS High School in the school's last graduating class. She received a BA degree in music from the University of Utah and continued her schooling for many years thereafter. She taught kindergarten for six years and then attended the Parsons School of Design in New York City for two years in Preparation for her work as an interior designer.
Her design projects included residential, business, and institutional buildings, including the LDS Church Office Building, the LDS Relief Society Building, Bratten's restaurants, Marriott "Hot Shoppes," and numerous banks, offices, and hospitals. She gave many lectures on design throughout the United States. She was also instrumental in developing the colorizer system utilized by Bennett's Paint Company.
For many years, Marian made her home in LaJolla, CA with her husband, George L. Hackett. After his death in 1990 she resumed her decorating career in Salt Lake City.
As a member of the LDS Church, she served in a variety of ward and stake positions. She was also a member of the LDS Sunday School General Board, the Tabernacle Choir, and the Robert Shaw Collegiate Chorale of New York City.
Marian was a woman of many extraordinary gifts, which she generously and graciously placed in the service of others. Her musical ability, artistic talents, original creativity, and organizational skills all benefited her family, friends, and associates. Her vitality and enthusiasm for life and all it has to offer enabled her to overcome the adversities that challenged her. She was patient and uncomplaining in all circumstances and found joy in every aspect of her life.
Besides her husband, Marian was preceded in death by two brothers, Joseph H. and Allen S. Cornwall; and two brothers-in-law, Winston H. Henderson, and Robert S. Richards. She is survived by two stepchildren, Robert S. Hackett and Julie H. Fields, and their families; a brother, J. Shirl Cornwall (Lenore), Flintridge, CA; three sisters, Bonnie C. Henderson, Margaret C. Richards, Carol C. Madsen (Gordon), all of Salt Lake City, and Beverly W. Cornwall of Francis and St. George. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews, with each of whom she had a special relationship. She will be greatly missed by all of her family.
Services will be held Wednesday Oct 11, 2000, 11 a.m. at the Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park and Mortuary, 3401 Highland Dr. Viewing will begin an hour before the service.
