Thelma Irene was born April 24, 1899, in Knickerbocker, Texas, to Beulah and Edward Pfiester. The Pfiester family contributed to early Texas history when Moses Henry Johnson and his wife, Delilah,
Mrs. Phillip's grandparents, located in the San Angelo area after the Civil War. After her husband's early death, Thelma Irene's grandmother, Mrs. Delilah Johnson, operated the stagestop inn at
Knickerbocker. Mrs. Phillip's parents, Edward and Beulah Pfiester, moved to Sutton County in 1903 where her father, Edward, drove mule-drawn freight wagons. During the Depression, her mother,
Beulah, opened the Sonora Courts where she lived until her death.
Thelma Irene raised her two children, Harold Briscoe and Louise Briscoe Glasscock, in Sonora and successfully ran for office in 1936 for the Sutton County treasurer's position, an office she held until her resignation in 1959.
Her husband, George W. Phillips, as well as her eight siblings, preceded Thelma Irene in death. She is survived by her daughter, Louise Briscoe Glasscock of Austin; her son, Harold Briscoe of Midland; her stepson, Dr. Wendell Phillips of Cedar Falls, Iowa;
her stepdaughter, Mrs. Bonnie Marx of Scottsdale, Ariz.; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
The family wishes to thank Bobbie Jo Glasscock for the daily loving care she has unselfishly given Gran the last seven years of her life.
Service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 1, at the First United Methodist Church in Sonora. Burial will follow in Sonora Cemetery. Arrangements are by Kerbow Funeral Home.
