EARLY DAY FORESTER, T.T. MUNGER, DIES

Memorial service for Thornton Taft Munger, who retired in 1946 after nearly 40 years with the U.S. Forest Service, will be at 4 p.m. Tuesday in the First Presbyterian Church.

Mr. Munger, who died Monday at age 91 in his home, 2755 SW Buena Vista Drive, was the first director of the Pacific Northwest Forest Experiment Station, established in 1924 with headquartersin Portland.

He was instrumental in creation of Portland's Forest Park and Hoyt Arboretum.

Mr. Munger was born Oct. 3, 1883, in North Adams, Mass., graduated from Yale University in 1905, then studied forestry practices in Europe for nine months before returning to Yale, where he earned a master of forestry degree in 1908.

He joined the Forest Service in Washington D.C., in 1908. In December of that year, he was assigned to the newly created North Pacific District of the Forest Service with headquarters in Portland, where he lived the rest of his life.

He was awarded an honorary doctor of science degree by Oregon State university in 1938 and later that year became chief of the Station Forest Management Research Division allowing more time for personal research.

Surviving are two sons, James Duncan Munger of Seattle and Osgood H. Munger of Salem and three grandchildren.

The family suggests remembrances be contibutions to Lewis and Clark College.
