Herman Asmus was born on March 28, 1874, in Germany, the son of Margaret (Sommer) and Peter Asmus. His sister was Annine Wiebke (Asmus) Tewes.

He married Amanda Catherine Reimers on September 2, 1898, in Hartley, Iowa. They had one child, Henry, during their marriage.

He died as a young father on December 17, 1901, in Hartley, Iowa, at the age of 27, and was buried there. This account was found in the local newspaper.

"We are sorry to note the death of our neighbor, Herman Asmus, who with his wife and little child were struck by the east bound passenger train Monday evening, while crossing the Milwaukee tracks, near the Prairie Queen Mill. His wife was not seriously hurt and the baby escaped injury. He died from the effects of the blow about 6:20 Tuesday morning. Funeral services to be held at the Methodist Church, Thursday at 1 o'clock, p.m."
