THE LATE MRS. JOHN PAINTER
The obituary of Mrs John Painter was omitted from the Democrat last week by mistake.
It will be recalled that she fell at her home on the Rossville road, resulting in the fracture of her left hip and was conveyed to Iowa City for treatment. Her niece, Mrs. Ethel Dayton accompanied her and the latter's daughter, Mrs. Lester Orr of Columbus Junction, was with her at the time of her death three days later at the University hospital.
As Emma Moyer, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Moyer, she was born at Darlington, Wis, August 13, 1859, and grew to womanhood in that vicinity. Her marriage to John Painter occurred at Mineral Point in 1878. Two years later they came to Monona, which was their home until 1898, when they moved to Waukon and Mr. Painter conducted a blacksmith shop on the corner where the Roggensack Monument works is now located. He passed away in 1910.
No children were born to this union, but they adopted Phoebe Moyer, niece of Mrs. Painter, who became the wife of Major Sidney Bowen, son of Dr. and Mrs. D.H. Bowen of Waukon. Later they moved to Carmel, California, where her death occurred a year ago.
Mrs. Painter was given devoted attention by her niece, Mrs. Ethel Dayton, during the latter years of her life. Others surviving are Mrs. P.J. Regan, Chicago; and J.D. Cowen, Milwaukee; niece and nephew of the deceased.
The remains were conveyed to Waukon by Undertakers Bakken and Hanson, and services were held in their funeral parlors conducted by Rev. W.H. Mitchell. Burial was in Oakland cemetery with the following casket bearers: George Durant, W.H. Niehaus, Paul Renne, L.A. Probert, B.W. Smith and G.W. Eaton.
