Pvt. Levi M. Babcock, left, and Pvt. Samuel Babcock, right, Company E, 35th New Jersey Infantry. Father and son. Levi was captured in February 1864 during the Meridian, Mississippi campaign. He was first sent to Cahaba Prison in Alabama as a POW. Later, he was sent to Andersonville Prison, where he died.

Samuel died of disease in Mound City, Illinois at the General Hospital there set up by the Federal Army to care for sick and wounded soldiers.

Letter written by Levi Babcock after he was captured. Cahawba Prison, AL, Feb. 15, 1864 in which Levi M. Babcock of the 35th NJ Infantry writes a family member. In part: "...I am well at present and I hope these few lines find you the same...I was captured a little over a week ago I don't want you to grieve after me...I think I will soon get exchanged and will get home but if not God is with me and he will comfort me...I want to meet you in heaven if not on earth...in this prison you must remember that God is with you...from your son, Levi...Jesse Miller John Beam and Jonah Case is here. This stamp you must put on your letter. Dir. to Cahoby prison alabamy...".

Upper corner of letter is clipped off, presumably where Babcock had placed the stamp. Research shows the writer to be Levi M. Babcock who would die at Andersonville Prison on Aug. 6, 1864.

As the letter was written about a week after he was captured, during that time the week prior the 35th New Jersey Infantry was taking part in the Meridian, Mississippi Campaign, indicating where and roughly when Levi was captured.

The Meridian Campaign took place from February 3–28, 1864, from Vicksburg, Mississippi to Meridian, Mississippi, by the Union Army of the Tennessee, led by Maj. Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman. Sherman captured Meridian, Mississippi, inflicting heavy damage to it. The campaign is viewed by historians as a prelude to Sherman's March to the Sea (Savannah Campaign) in that a large swath of damage and destruction was inflicted on Central Mississippi as Sherman marched across the state and back.
