Came to Thurman, Warren Co., NY before 1800 and was back and forth between Bolton & Warrensburgh later. In the 1840 Bolton census, John is 86 years old, recognized as a soldier of the revolution, living with Joseph & Maria Beswick Putney. son Asa Bates went to Otto NY. A daughter Hannah went to Montgomery County, NY. Brothers Ford Bates and Carver Bates were also Soldiers of the Revolutionary Army.
