Born, 8 October, 1880, De Witt, Clinton County, Iowa. She moved to Ogden, Boone County, Iowa with her family sometime between 1881 and 1884. Kate graduated from Ogden High School, Ogden, Iowa, on 7 June, 1897. After graduation, she worked for a time setting type for the Ogden Messenger, edited by John Thompson. She then taught in the rural school system in Boone County. One of them being Prairie View (McElroy) Rural School, Section 32, Beaver Township, Boone County, Iowa, just across the road from the McElroy's farm. She was a boarder in the McElroy home at the time of the 1900 census, Beaver Township, Boone County, Iowa. Kate taught many of the McElroy children (Joe McElroy told me once that it was the only bad thing about having the school right across the road and the teacher living in your home,("You could not play hooky from school"). Kate also taught at the Excelsion Rural School, in Section 23, Beaver Township, in 1901. Then at the Ogden School system from 1902 to 1905. In 1905 she left Ogden to homestead a land claim of 640 acres, near Wood Lake, Cherry County, Nebraska. Neighbors were few and far between, and she taught at a rural school three miles away from her homestead. On 1 April, 1912, she married Thomas Peter Jordan, at Valentine, Nebraska. Tom was born on 16 May, 1876. They had four children Mary Margaret, born 21 February, 1913; Catherine Elizabeth, born 28 December, 1913; Cecelia Susanna, born 20 March, 1915; Agnes Mary, born 8 December, 1916. For a time they lived in Kansas City, Missouri, from 1912 to 1914, where Tom was a carpenter, they then returned to their homestead in Wood Lake, Nebraska. Just two months after they moved back from her homestead to his homestead, Tom was digging a well when he strained himself and ruptured his intestines. By the time he got to the doctor it was too late to save him and he died of peritonitis of the intestines. Tom passed away on Saturday, 18 August, 1917, at the age of 41 years, 3 months, 2 days. He is buried at Valentine, Nebraska. While they were in Missouri Tom Hilley, Catherine's brother took care of their farmstead. In 1919, Kate and the girls returned to Ogden, Iowa again leaving the homestead in the care of her brother Tom. She lived here in Ogden for five years than in 1924, they returned to Wood Lake, Nebraska homestead, where the girls grew-up and later married. Kate later in life moved to 436 Main Street, Chadron, Nebraska, for a time and then moved to Hawthorne, California and Gardena, California. She would live part of the time with one daughter Mary and at other times with her daughter Cecelia who lived in California. Kate passed away on Thursday, 8 April, 1976 in Nebraska, at the age of 95 years, 6 months, 0 days. She is buried at Calvary Cemetery, Chadron, Nebraska, beside her brother John and sister Mag. Kate was thought of as a kindly person and a joy to be around, as she would come back to the Ogden area to visit family and friends.
