When the Federal Government acquired 55,264 acres in Ripley, Jefferson and Jennings Counties in 1940 for the military reservation known as Jefferson Proving Ground, the cemeteries in the entire area were moved to other locations in the three aforenamed counties. Parcels of land were purchased by the U.S. Government for this purpose and the remains from each grave were re-interred in the same relative location that they were buried in the cemetery from which the removal was made. If remains were completely decayed, a shovel of dirt from that grave was moved from one location to the other to signify the "moving of the deceased person's grave". Otter Creek Cemetery was moved northwest of Nebraska, IN.
