Inscription

In Memory of Mrs . Sarah wife of Mr. Daniel Dyer who died July 10, 1819 AD 71. The first line of the verse at the bottom is difficult to read, but the second line is "A tender Mother and a...Wife. The top pictures a weeping willow tree and an urn. In the 1700's, there was interest in Greek archeology. The weeping willow with the Greek urn meant "weeping" or mourning and grieving for a loved one. The saying "she is in her willows" meant she was in mourning for her spouse or loved one. In Asian culture the weeping willow also was also known as fast growing tree which tolerated many growing conditions, so also had a reputation as "healers and renewers". In some cultures, they were a sign of immorality. It was common to place willow branches on the grave, with the belief that the spirit of the dead would rise through the tree.
