The obituary of Remus Nathan Swisher as published in the October 21, 1943, issue of The Mountain Eagle:

R. N. SWISHER IS CALLED BY DEATH

Remus Nathan Swisher, coroner for 12 years and first undertaker and embalmer of Letcher County was called from time on October 18, 1943, after an illness of several months.

Mr. Swisher was born in Remus, Michigan, April 1, 1880, he being the first boy born in his town was christened for the town, Remus. He came to Letcher County about thirty years ago, was married to Cinda Pigman in 1918, to which union was born two children, Jeanette Yarlette, and Jack Remus. His business establishment of Funeral Directing was the first and only one in Whitesburg until 1932. He was known by the old and young all over Letcher County. His kindness, advice and loyal friendship will be missed by all those who knew and loved him.

He leaves to mourn his loss, his wife, Mrs. Cinda Swisher and one daughter, Jeanette Yarlette of Whitesburg; one son, Jack Remus, who is an aviation student at Greenville, S. C. Three brothers, J. M., of Oregon; R. P. and Oscar of Michigan; one sister, Mrs. Lula Williams of Michigan.

Funeral services will be held at the Presbyterian Church, Thursday, October 21st, 1:30 P.M., with Rev. Joe T. Sudduth and Rev. K. E. Hill, officiating. Burial will be in the Fitzpatrick Cemetery, Sandlick, Ky. Craft Funeral Home in charge.

Remus Nathan Swisher was so named because both he and the town of Remus, Michigan were born about the same time. His father Nathan Swisher donated 80 acres of his farm in Wheatland Michigan as part of the town of Remus.

Remus was an Undertaker and owned a Funeral Home in whitesburg, Letcher County Kentucky

Remus was the Letcher County Coroner for a number of years.

Remus was married to Lucinda Pigman.
