DIED. HOPKINS -- In San Andreas, August 17, 1881, Walter Hopkins, aged 5 years and 7 months, youngest child of the late Capt. W. L. and Nellie Hopkins. Stockton (CA) Daily Evening Herald, Friday, August 19, 1881.

Willie's elder sister, Amy Hopkins River, always told us that he was born "after Papa died" and that he was a cripple from being tipped out of a baby carriage, and that he had a hunch-back. The typical story of a child who has tuberculosis of the spine is of an injury to account for the disease. His mother, Nellie, died of tuberculosis and what is more natural than that a child of that family have tuberculosis of the spine. [Related to me by his nephew, Dr. Louis P. River II.]
