SIMONE M. SNYDER
93, left this life for greener pastures on July 15, 2011, at sunrise, four months shy of her 94th birthday. Born in Houffalize, Belgium, on November 15, 1917, Simone is survived by three sons and two granddaughters.
WWII presented two major events in her life: surviving in the heart of the Battle of the Bulge and meeting her husband of 48 years, John L. (1912-1993). They married in August 1945 in Germany from where she emigrated to the U.S. and settled in Washington D.C. The family then moved to Amarillo, TX. in 1957, and on to Pomona in 1968.
Services will be held on Friday, 11:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church in Pomona on Garey Ave. just north of Holt Ave.

The Inland Valley Daily Bulletin July 22, 2011 Section A, pg. 6.Simone Marie Snyder, 93, left for greener pastures on July 15, 2011, exactly four months shy of her 94th birthday. She made her exit in a most elegant fashion, surrendering peacefully and without any fear.

From Simone's memorial biography ~ July 22, 2011:

Born in Houffalize, Belgium, on November 15, 1917, she spent her early years going to school and enjoying a normal childhood. She developed an early interest in cooking which she initially learned from her mother. Her world changed abruptly with WWII when she was in her early twenties. She eventually found herself in the heart of the Battle of the Bulge where she survived both a bombing raid that devastated her village and several face-to-face encounters with German Nazi's. In fact, upon the arrival of the Allies, her village received a commendation from General Patton for rebuilding a bridge in 45 minutes to allow the Allied tanks to cross over. She probably managed a feast for the troops out of chicken and K-Rations.

At the end of the war, she met and married John L. (1912-1993) in August 1945 in Germany and emigrated to the U.S., specifically Washington, D.C. The family moved to Amarillo, Texas, in 1937, and on to Pomona in 1968 where she's been ever since.

Simone loved cooking for everyone and everyone loved the dishes she served up. As she got older and was restricted to a wheelchair, she continued her cooking via an electric fry pan on the dining room table. You can take the Cook out of the kitchen, but....

She was also an accomplished seamstress, making many of her own outfits and for others as well. Game shows were a favorite of hers, especially "The Price is Right" (with Bob Barker) and "Let's Make a Deal."

In her later years, she struggled with numerous medical problems that she always managed to overcome. She couldn't fight forever (who can?), but she did squeeze out 93+ years of good, solid effort.
