Mr. McAden attended Christ School in Arden, Davidson College, and was a sixth generation graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He served in the United States Navy Amphibious Corps in the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre during World War II and participated in the first American landing at Nagasaki, where the atomic bomb ended the war.
In Gastonia, Mr. McAden was a member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church and volunteered at Crisis Assistance Ministry and Gaston County Health Department.
He was preceded in death by a brother, James T. McAden, Jr. and a sister, Charlotte Thomas.
A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, February 19, at Covenant Village, 1351 Robinwood Road, Gastonia. A private interment will be held at 10:00 a.m. at Elmwood Cemetery in Charlotte.
