Gertie was a resident at a nursing home I worked in and we became friends. She had an amazing life story and she was still very active while I knew her, well into her 90s. She taught cooking classes at the facility and had a blast. Two of her sisters, Dora McDonald, and Kay Winfield, were at the facility also.

This is from her obituary from Helena's Independent Record newspaper:

"Gertrude H. Barker, 99, died Dec. 22, at the Big Sky Care Center.

She was born Jan. 20, 1893 in St. Paul, Minn., to Peter and Mary Gross. She received her schooling in Waverly, S.D. She came to the Townsend area in 1913, and was married to Charles R. Barker in Helena on Jan. 12, 1915. They ranched near Townsend until 1946, then purchased a movie theater in Whitehall, which they operated until 1949. Gertrude was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Evelyn Schopfer; a brother, Fred Gross, and three sisters, Theresa Nopper, Josephine Moran, and Dora McDonald.

Survivors include three daughters, Viola Weed, Helen Gullard, of Leavenworth, Wash. and Mary Ann Buzzas of Great Falls; two sons, Earl A. Barker of Salinas, Calif. and Charles P. Barker of Westminster, Calif.; two brothers, Pete Gross of Helena and Edward Gross of Placerville, Calif.; two sisters, Kay Winfield and Helen Moe, both of Helena; 20 grandchildren and numerous great and great great grandchildren."
