The following from "The Descendants of Hans Graff and Bertha Meyer: Family Tree/History"

Julius Graff was born June 22, 1867, on Gaarden Flisberg (farm) near Elverun, Norway. He immigrated in 1888 landing at Ellis Island, New York. Expecting fabulous wonders including gold paved streets as rumored in Norway, he was sorely disappointed with New York City. Arriving in a rainstorm, he rode a carriage over cobblestones and mud wishing he could return to Norway. He felt the rains were the "tears of the angels" sympathizing with him. Unable to turn back as his passage was paid on bond, he proceeded to Lac Qui Parle County, Minnesota. to fulfill his obligations as an indentured servant.

In 1895, he homesteaded a land of "nothing but trrees, water, and mosquitoes" in Soler Township, Minnesota. Here he built a log cabin and created a farm.
