NORTH MANCHESTER — Miriam Weybright Cable, 95, died Aug. 14 [2012] at Timbercrest Retirement Community, North Manchester, following a brief illness.

A longtime resident of Benton Township in Elkhart County, Miriam and her late husband, William H. Cable, were known for their seed corn farm and support of Church of the Brethren and Rotary International causes. She was a homemaker, teacher, 4-H leader and church, community and Rotary International volunteer.

She was preceded in death by her husband and her brother, George D. Weybright, and is survived by five sons, 13 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Miriam was born June 9, 1917, the daughter of Charles Francis Weybright and Nettie Culler Weybright.

A lifelong member of the Church of the Brethren, she lived most of her life on the family seed farm.

In 1942, Miriam married William Howard Cable of Yakima, Wash. at Camp Mack in Milford. She supported Bill in their seed corn farm business, Weybright Seed Service, which was founded by her father, and MiGro Hybrids, which Bill founded.

In 1978, she and Bill sold the farm and moved to Syracuse Lake where they enjoyed demonstrating how to live simply and visited and volunteered in many countries, often traveling on behalf of Rotary International. Bill died in 1995 and Miriam moved to Timbercrest in 2002.

Miriam was a graduate of New Paris High School and Manchester College. She taught elementary school at Marquette School in Mishawaka from 1939 to 1942, and nursery and middle school in Tacoma, Wash., from 1942 to 1943. Miriam performed with the Lyric Choir and the Church of the Brethren District Choir and taught Sunday school and directed music and choirs at Rock Run Church of the Brethren.

She was a 65-year member of Elkhart County Home Demonstration Clubs, serving as county president for two years. She was a longtime adult leader of the Jackson Producers 4-H Club and founded the Fairfield Pioneers 4-H Club. In 1995, she received the Indiana State 4-H Alumni Award. At Timbercrest, she helped found and served as president of the Timbercrest Auxiliary.

Her sons include Charles (Vicky) Cable of Claremont, Calif., Alan (Marilyn) Cable of Hortonville, Wis., Bruce (Judy) Cable of Zephyr Cove, Nev., Lowell (Susan) Cable of Kenya, and Edwin (Sandy) Cable of Chambersburg, Pa.

A memorial service will take place at the Timbercrest chapel Sept. 22 at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Tim Waits, pastor of the Rock Run Church of the Brethren, officiating.

Preferred memorial gifts may be made to Bethany Theological Seminary, Richmond; Manchester University, North Manchester; or Trees for the Future, Silver Spring, Md.

From Charles Cable, "In October 2016, we scattered her ashes around the oak tree our family planted in the memory of my father, William Howard Cable. The tree is south of the center door of Quinter-Miller Auditorium, Camp Alexander Mack (Church of the Brethren), Milford, Indiana. They were married there on June 21, 1942, and over her lifetime, she attended summer camps, district conferences and other meeting at Camp Mack. Camp was a significant part of our childhood. The camp is seven miles west-south-west of the family farm on CR 48, Benton Township, Elkhart County, Indiana."
