He was born May 1, 1923, in Provo, to James Curtis and Helen Ann Bench Duke. He grew up in Boneta and then Duchesne. In 1943 he joined the US Army and fought in World War II. After his release in 1946, he served as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Western States Mission.
James married Beth Winkler on Nov. 20, 1953, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. He graduated from BYU in 1956 and went on to teach at the Laketown High School near Bear Lake, Vernal Central, Myton and Roosevelt East Elementary schools.
Later, he served with Beth in South Carolina Columbia mission, and was an ordinance worker in the Provo and Vernal Temples.
James is survived by his wife, Beth; children, Maureen (John) Kijek, Bernard (Karen) Duke, Allison Duke, Karen (Ken) Secrest, 19 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and sister, Della Mae Palmer.
He was preceded in death by his parents and step-father, Heber John "Jack" Odekirk.
Funeral services will be held on Sat., Feb. 9 at 11 a.m., at the Roosevelt East LDS Stake Center, 600 N. 600 East. There will be a viewing on Friday from 6-8 p.m. at the Hullinger Mortuary and from 10-10:45 a.m. Saturday at the church.
Burial will be in the Bluebell Cemetery with military honors. Condolences may be shared at www.hullingermortuary.com.
