According to Manning Leonard's genealogy of the Solomon Leonard Family of Bridgewater, Mass., Orange Leonard was born on February 3, 1834, in Wallingford, Vermont. He was the son of Simeon Leonard (1781-1859) and Roenah Cole Leonard. According to federal records in the National Archives, Orange Leonard was drafted to be a mariner for the Union during the Civil War, but took the option of hiring/furnishing a substitute. He is also mentioned in cod fishing logbooks from Tremont, Maine, where he fished as a first mate on the schooners Diamond and Decatur. He moved to Bucksport, South Carolina, ca. 1874, where his last two children, Georgia A. Leonard and Charles Albert Leonard were born. No record of his death or burial have been located as of February 2013.
