LAURA E. ROETHER DIES QUIETLY IN HER SLEEP SUNDAY
Laura Ewing Roether, 84, last surviving member of one of the pioneer families of the Maumee Valley and life-long resident of Wood county, died in her sleep Sunday morning at her home in Perrysburg. she is the mother of County Treasurer Herbert E. Roether.
She was born near Hull's Prairie, June 11, 1865, to William Henry and Elizabeth Moore Ewing. Her grandfather, Samuel Ewing, came here from Pennsylvania in 1808, when he received a several thousand acre land grant from the federal government, and settled on the site of what was later to become the site of the Battle of Fort Meigs.
She was a member and past-president of the New Century Club Perrysburg and the Baptist Church, Hasking. She was united in marriage on October 8, 1893 to Herny R. Roether, M.D., pioneer physician of Wood County. Dr. Roether preceded her in death November 13, 1939.
Surviving are one son, Herbert Ewing Roether, Treasurer Wood County and three grandchildren, Herbert Bright, Laura Ann, and Henry William.
The body is in the Witzler Funeral Home, Perrysburg. Services will be at 2:30 p.m. at the Witzler Funeral Home Tuesday with the Rev. R. Malcolm Ward, Rector, St. Paul's Episcopal Church., Maumee, and Rev. E. J. Melchert, Zoar Luthern Church, Perrysburg, officiating. Burial will be in Fort Meigs Cemetery, Perrysburg.
Honorary pallbearers will be Wood County officials, Probate Judge Raymond E. Ladd, Common Pleas Judge Earl K. Solether, Prosecutor Floyd Coller, Clerk of Courts Mrs. Mary R. Mercer, Sheriff Clarence Marsh, Auditory Harry L. Williamson, Recorder Clyde Loomis, School Superintendent Charles Harkeness, Commissioners Myron Spackey, Harry Smithers, and Gus F. Keller, and Engineer Bert Henning.
