Wheeler was born Samuel Wheeler Bowers,but was known in younger days as S.W.and in his adult age was known as Wheeler. He was a prominent farmer and was well known in the area.He was the son of Daniel and Didama Phiney Bowers. Had a brother John P Bowers that preceeded him in death.

He married Lovinia Smith Oct 9,1853. They had three children,Samuel S,b.1855 d.1861, Mary L., b.1857 d.1877 and James Wheeler Bowers, b. April 1862 d. 25 Mar 1936
