Carmelo Felix Matta was a key figure in the effort to liberate the Puerto Rican island of Vieques from U.S. military control. In 1989, he and his family carried out one of the most dramatic episodes of confrontation with U.S. federal authorities in the history of Vieques. Matta and his family suffered much persecution and abuse from the U.S. military, but his efforts were not in vain. The U.S. Navy was forced to leave Vieques after 60 years of occupation and bombing practice.
