Dr. John Peterson Goodwyn was son of Albert Thweatt and Martha T. (King) Goodwyn of Dinwiddie County, Virginia. He was educated at University of Virginia and the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicaine where he graduated in 1849. He married Martha E. Greenway, daughter of Robert Greenway and his wife, Ann Elizabeth Kennon Wyatt,and grand-daughter of Dr. James Greenway, an amateur botanist and well known physician of Dinwiddie County, Virginia. Dr. John Peterson Goodwyn and his wife lived at "Spring Grove" beginning in 1849, raised their children: William Albert, Edward Greenway, Mary Amelia, John Peterson, McIlwaine, Herbert Lee, Wade Hampton, James Milton, and Henry Rogerson. All but two of the children are buried in the Goodwyn Family Cemetery along with the Doctor and his wife and other extended family members. The two sons who are buried in Blandford Cemetery in Petersburg are Herbert Lee and Wade Hampton. The land on which Dr. Goodwyn lived is still in the Goodwyn family today.
