On 25 Dec 1863, Edward reenlisted, having received a bounty of $421.99, and on 15 May 1864 he was wounded.
On 27 Jul 1864 Edward transferred to the 20th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry.
On 25 Aug 1864 he was taken prisoner at Reams' Station, Dinwiddie County, Virginia, and on 12 Apr 1865, he was paroled from prison. He ended his service by mustering out of the 20th Massachusetts on 27 Jul 1865.
On 3 Sep 1866 Edward L. Cudworth, 22, married Mary Jane Williams, 24, at Oxford, Massachusetts.
He applied for a veteran's pension in Oct 1889, and he was enumerated in the 1890 US Federal census, Veteran's Schedule in Jun 1890 at Charlton, Worcester County, Massachusetts, as having served in the 15th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, Co. E, where it states that he spent 10 months at Belle Island Prison.
He and Mary Jane Williams were enumerated in the 1900 US Federal census on 7 Jun 1900 at Charlton, MA. Of their five children, only one was still living in 1900.
He died on 3 Mar 1906 at Charlton, MA, age 62 years, 3 months and 26 days old. On 22 Mar 1906 Mary Jane Williams received a widow's pension based on his military service.
