A little log school house had been built south of the Blane house, near the Burying Ground, and here the neighborhood children attended school, the Blanes running home for dinner and to do the chores. The first School Law had been passed in 1825 by the State Legislature, but it was several years before school funds were available to pay the teachers, and they took produce for pay and "boarded around", though most of them stayed permanently with the Blanes because they had plenty of room.

Abner Peeler was the first teacher and he also was a Preacher, filling the pulpit at Sweetwater on Sundays. Madaline evidently respected him greatly because she named her son, born in 1838, Abner Peeler Blane in his honor. And a later teacher Samuel Humphrey was honored by Madaline when she named little Samuel, Samuel H. Blane, born in 1840. ( ksorrison3389)
