McCallum, Greta Margaret (Burgess), formerly of Beaver Brook, Col. Co., passed away Friday, October 30, 2009 in the Mira Long Term Care Center, Truro. Born in Greens Creek, Col. Co., on Christmas Day 1913, she was a daughter of the late Thomas and Jessie May (Dartt) Burgess. Greta was the last surviving member of her of her immediate family. At one time, Greta was an active member of Christ Anglican Church in Beaver Brook, a community volunteer in many groups and organizations giving much pleasure with her natural gift and love for music. So much so, Greta was honored with a plaque for playing the piano for many senior citizens' outings. She also enjoyed playing her mouth organ. Greta was the helpmate of her husband Wilfred on their farm in Beaver Brook. She also accepted the responsibility of helping with the care and raising of two younger brothers-in-law Sylvester and Arthur McCallum. Her care for family didn't end there. In the time of illness Greta assisted with the care of her mother and five of her sisters. She was a cook at Cobiquid Consolidated Elementary School before her retirement.
She is survived by her brothers-in-law Sylvester and Arthur McCallum; sisters-in-law; special nephews, Ruben Burgess, Ronald Biddle with whom she made her home for a number of years; several nephews and nieces.
Greta was predeceased by her husband Wilfred McCallum; sisters, Lydia Collins, Ina Yuill, Edith Biddle, Hazel Loughead, Jessie Graham, Florence Archibald, two sisters in infancy; brothers, Victor, Garfield, Murray, Dartt and Cyrus.
Visitation will commence at 12:30 pm until funeral service time at 2pm, on Wednesday Nov. 4th, in the Mattatall~Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street, Truro. Rev. Gary Yetman will officiate with burial to follow in Christ Anglican Church Cemetery, Beaver Brook. In lieu of flowers, donations in Greta's memory may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association or to a charity of choice. Greta's family would like to give a special thank you to the staff of the Mira Long Term Care Center, Truro, for their wonderful care given to Greta.
