A pioneer Forney resident, Jessie Lewis Brooks was born in Forney June 20, 1877 the daughter of John and Leona Lewis, pioneer residents of the area.

The family founded the Lewis Academy, a private school, in the days before public schools were available in the area. The academy building later was given to the school district by the family.

Mrs. Brook was a graduate of Mary Nash College at Sherman and also studied art under Frank Reaugh of Dallas and was well known not onlyl for her art work, but for home gardening as well.

She was married to Madison B. Brooks on May 28, 1901 and to this union three children were born; Clarissa Sarah "Sallie", Madison Ben and Davis E.
