The activities of the brave and long-lived Mrs. Sheppard, who died at the age of "100 years, 6 months, and 5 days", extended from the American Revolution into the third year of the American Civil War. Born Catherine Van Winkle, she was the daughter of staunch patriots Jacob Van Winkle and the former Rachel Cammegaer, and the widow of George Sheppard, a Revolutionary War veteran who had predeceased her 20 years earlier. As as a young girl she and her sister Maria carried messages from George Washington to LaFayette while en route to Belleville, New Jersey. Her remains lie in an unmarked grave in this burial ground.
