MORTON - Virginia M. Abel, 97, of Morton died at 1:55 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2013, at Methodist Medical Center in Peoria.

She was born Oct. 24, 1915, in Allentown, Tazewell County, Ill., to Leonard C. and Jessie Fern (Cornelius) Russell. She married Frank Joseph Abel on Dec. 31, 1938, in Mackinaw. He preceded her in death on Dec. 16, 1989.

She also was preceded in death by one grandchild, one brother and one sister.

Surviving are one son, Rodney (Martha) Abel of Deer Creek; one daughter, Sharon (Vernon) Acker of Rochester, Minn.; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was a 1933 graduate of Morton High School and attended business school through Caterpillar Inc.

Virginia had worked as a salesperson at Witzig's in Morton for 14 years. She also worked in the payroll department at Caterpillar for 10 years and Sealtest Dairy for three years.

She was a member of Morton United Methodist Church, where she had taught Sunday school, worked in the church office and helped put together the "Footprints" monthly newsletter.

Virginia enjoyed working in her flower garden and lived in her home since 1948.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2013, at Knapp-Johnson Funeral Home and Cremation Center, with the Rev. Gary Motta officiating. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 12, and one hour prior to services Wednesday, both at the funeral home. A graveside service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Glendale Memorial Gardens in Pekin.
