Born Sept. 11, 1926, in Frederick County, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Theresa Davis Coates.
She was the wife of the late Joseph D. Key.
Mrs. Key was a member of Libertytown United Methodist Church, and an active member of the Libertytown Volunteer Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary, where she was in charge of booking banquets, bingo and numerous dinners. At the recent 40th annual Libertytown carnival parade, which stopped in front of her house, she was honored for her dedication to the fire company.
For many years she assisted the Chris Kline family, Samuel and Donna Cable family, Zan and Gloria Grabenstein family, and the Calvin George family. She enjoyed bingo, cooking, flowers and being with her family.
Surviving are two sons, Lemuel D. Key Sr. and wife Michele, and Anthony T. Key and wife Stacey, all of Libertytown; six grandchildren, Jaren M. Key, Gavin J. Key, Carrington Y. Key, Lemuel D. Key Jr., Teasha A. Key and Karessa Key; two sisters, Katherine Hollingsworth of Libertytown, and Joana Coates of New Windsor; brother, Kenneth Coates of Laurel; uncle, Russell Rice of Martinsburg, W.Va.; godson, Jarvis Brooks; and lifelong friend, Grace "Bunny" Patterson.
A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 19, at Libertytown United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jerry Cline, her pastor, officiating. Interment will be in John Wesley Cemetery, Libertytown.
The family will receive friends at Hartzler Funeral Home, 11802 Liberty Road, Libertytown, Tuesday, Aug. 17, and Wednesday, Aug. 18, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
