Ernest Cloyd, 44 year old resident of the Burdick community, was found dead by Joe Beard at about 4 p.m. Monday, September 23 in Beard's automobile on the G. D. Beard farm. Evidence presented at the coroner's inquest revealed Cloyd was last seen by Mr. Beard at about 6:30 a.m. Monday morning when he left to work in a barn in another field. He was not seen again until found by Joe Beard. Dr. W. W. Shepherd, Taylor County Coroner, stated on examining the scene of the death that Cloyd had placed a string around the trigger of a single barrel shotgun and used the right foot to pull the trigger of the gun with the barrel placed against his head over the right ear. The shot passed through the head and out the other side. Due to the degree of rigor-mortis it was revealed that death occurred about 7 a.m. The coroner's inquest stated death was due to self-inflicted wounds to the head. Cloyd was born September 29, 1913 in Taylor County. He lived around the Burdick community most of his life. He lived in the home of G. W. Beard, Campbellsville. He was the son of William Turner Cloyd, who died in 1936, and Myrtle Wager Cloyd, who died in 1938. He is survived by his daughter, Teresa Valerie Cloyd; one brother, Forrest Cloyd, Route 5; four sisters, Mrs. Ida Wilhelm, Indianapolis, Indiana; Mrs. Mae Burton, Edinburg, Indiana; Mrs. Hazel Cropp, Jeffersonville, Indiana; Mrs. Henthorn, Louisville. He was preceded in death by one sister, Mrs. Mary White and two brothers, Fred and Russell. Services were held at the Lyon Funeral Home Wednesday, September 25 at 3 p.m. Burial services were conducted at the Liberty Cumberland Presbyterian Church with the Reverends Calvin Mouser and J. M. Vaughn in charge. Burial was in the family cemetery. Pallbearers were Bobby Turner, Critt Wright, Jimmy Jeff Dudgeon, Stanley Feathers, J. T. Moss, and Charles Gilpin.
