Mario P. Cervone, 79, a retired accountant and Realtor who was active with church-related groups, died Tuesday at his Glenside home.

Since 1953, he had owned and operated Mario P. Cervone Real Estate in North Philadelphia, and until his death he helped senior citizens prepare their tax returns.

Mr. Cervone, who was born in Philadelphia, graduated from Northeast High School for Boys and studied at what is now Peirce Junior College and at the University of Pennsylvania. During World War II, he served with an Army strategic services unit in India.

After working as a volunteer for a federal credit union at a Philadelphia church in the 1950s, he helped operate the credit union for more than 20 years. He then was a civilian accountant for a naval unit at the former Philadelphia Naval Shipyard for 10 years, retiring in 1981.

He moved to Glenside 26 years ago from Philadelphia.

Mr. Cervone was a former president of the Men of La Salle, the fathers' club of La Salle College High School, and a former president of the parents' association at Allentown College of St. Francis de Sales. He had represented the schools of the former St. Mary of the Eternal Church in Philadelphia and St. Luke the Evangelist Church in Glenside on the Roman Catholic archdiocese's home and school association.

He also served as accountant for St. Luke the Evangelist Church.

Mr. Cervone had participated in 40 consecutive annual retreats with the Immaculate Conception and Palm Sunday Retreat groups of the Men of Malvern.

He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Rita Verruno Cervone; children Frank P., Mary Louise R., Dr. Paul N., Colette Cervone-Pavain, and Diana M.; nine grandchildren; three brothers; and a sister.

Friends may call after 10 a.m. today at St. Luke the Evangelist Church, Easton Road and Fairhill Avenue, where a Funeral Mass will be offered at 11 a.m. Burial will follow in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Cheltenham Avenue and Easton Road, Wyndmoor.

The family suggests contributions to the Support Center for Child Advocates, 801 Arch St., Suite 608, Philadelphia 19107.
