BOWEN-Buford Ledford Bowen of Ponte Vedra Beach, formerly of Jacksonville, Florida and Tyron, North Carolina, died at his home April 10, 2004. He was born March 18, 1919, in Tallasee, Alabama, the second of eight children to the late Annie Elizabeth Dean and Festus Ledford Bowen.

He graduated from Marion Military Institute in 1928. In 1930 he received his Bachelor of Arts degree in business administration at Birmingham Southern College, where he was a member of the SAE Fraternity.

Buford was hired as a stockbroker with Fenner & Bean in 1939. Fenner and Bean relocated Buford to Asheville, North Carolina in 1941, and there to Jacksonville, Florida in 1942. When World War II began in 1943, Buford left his position at Fenner & Bean to serve his country in the United States Navy as a Lieutenant J.G. When the war ended in 1945, Buford was awarded an honorable discharge as a Lieutenant Commander and resumed his position at Merrill Lynch. After 37 years of service, Buford retired from Merrill Lynch in 1976.

Buford was an avid golfer and active in many religious and civic affairs in Jacksonville. He was a member of the Bishop's Standing Committee of the Protestant Episcopal Church, Senior Warden at St. Mark's Episcopal Church with the first three priests. In 1989, he endowed "The Bowen Conference on Ethics" at the Kanuga Conference Center, Hendersonville, North Carolina. He was co-chairman of the North Florida Committee for Project Hope, Secretary-Treasure of the Duval County Hospital Authority and Honorary Member of the Timuquana Country Club. He was also a member of the Ponte Vedra Inn & Club, The Lodge at Ponte Vedra Beach, former Commodore of the Florida Yacht Club, past member of the River Club of Jacksonville and past member of the Red Fox Country Club, Tryon, North Carolina.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Ruth Shepardson Bowen, their daughter Kitty and his second wife, Sally Turner Bowen. He is survived by his wife, the former Beckwith Lockwood James, Harry R. James, Jr., Elizabeth Galliand Brent (John W. Brent), Elizabeth Lockwood Brent Alexander (Edward Roe Alexander), John William Brent, Jr., James Oliver Brent, Gail James Brent (John), Elizabeth Brent Alexander (Ted), a brother, Charles Bowen of Tallassee, Alabama, a sister, Mary Bowen Lisman of Opelika, Alabama, a nephew, Robert Bowen, nieces, Ana Bowen, Maria Bowen Storey and numerous cousins.

The funeral will be Tuesday, April 13th at 11:00 AM at Christ Church in Pante Vedra. Memorials may be made to Community Hospice of Northeast Florida. Arrangements are being handled by Hardage Giddens Funeral Home, 1701 Beach Blvd, Jacksonville, FL.
