Son of Samuel Moxley Sr. and Elizabeth
Springer, he moved with his parents to
Fayette County, PA in 1853 and again to
Shelbina in Shelby County, MO in 1867.

On Sept. 29, 1869 he married in Shelbina,
MO, to Jennie J. Messmore (Jan. 9, 1851-
Nov. 29, 1918). She was born near
Uniontown, PA, daughter of John Morgan
Messmore (1808-1879) and Sarah Rex
(1817-1883) who lived in Fayette County,
PA.

Samuel and Jennie moved with their family
from Shelbina, MO to Glasco in Cloud County,
KS in 1884.They had seven children and
another who died young.
Samuel was a carpenter and wagon maker.
He spent time in Cripple Creek, CO during
the gold rush days, probably repairing
ore wagons. At one point he lived in
Bennington, KS where he operated a
carpenter's shop and lived above the shop.
While there he served a term as mayor.

The marriage of S.J. (as he was known) was
often in turmoil, even before they left MO
in 1884. For the most part the children
were raised without the consistent presence
of their father. The couple were divorced
in the mid-1890s.

In 1903 Jennie married John D. Burns (1857-
1914) an itinerant barber that she met in
Glasco. After his death she spent her last
years with her daughter, Anna Shepard, in
Chapman and died there. John and Jennie
were buried in the Glasco Cemetery in Cloud
County. His name and dates are on the Burns
stone but hers were never added.

S.J. never remarried. After 1915 he lived
in Chapman with his daughter, Maude
Halbert and died at her home.
