Enlisted 6/1/1861 at Corinth, MS, he was mustered into "H" Co. MS 16th Infantry as a 4th Sergeant.
Reenlisted 1/1862 for 2 years' service; $50 Reenlistment Bounty due.
Promoted to 1st Sergeant May & June 1862 Roll.
Wounded by gunshot 6/27/1862; admitted into Institute Hospital, Richmond, VA.; transferred to Trenton, MS for 30 days.
Present July & Aug 1862 Roll.
Absent, Sick in hospital Sept & Oct 1862 Roll.
Present on all rolls Nov & Dec 1862 thru March & April 1864.
Promoted to Ordnance Sergeant 5/1864.
He was Killed In Action in the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House, VA. when he, Color Corporal Swittenberg and others followed Color Sergeant Alexander Mixon in counterattacking the Union position before them. Seeing the battleflags jammed in the retaken works, C.S.A. General Rhodes said "It was the bravest deed I have ever seen performed!"

The 16th Infantry Regiment was organized at Corinth, Mississippi, in June, 1861, and about 950 officers and men were mustered into Confederate service. They were recruited in the counties of Pike, Wilkinson, Holmes, Copiah, Adams, and Jasper.
