WSGS History: Roderick "R. R." Baker was born in Perry County on April 14, 1844.
In 1862, when he was 19, he volunteered to serve in the 19th Kentucky Infantry, Company D with the Union Division during the Civil War.
In 1863, Baker found himself in Pennsylvania on the front lines of the Battle of Gettysburg. Wounded during the fighting, he was carried away and treated. Baker eventually was taken to a Louisville hospital to recover.
It was while he was in Louisville, he studied medicine with the doctor who had helped him recover from his wounds. Baker could now help others as a trained physician.
In 1865, Baker returned to Hazard as Perry County's first registered doctor.
Dr Roderick "R.R." Baker died in 1900.
